To Oliver,  

Thank you for sending us your interesting email about pollution. We didn’t know that you had to put two layers of sunblock on in the summer time.  We didn’t know that New Zealand was right under the ozone layer. Now all of us will hopefully put two layers of sunblock on in the summertime.

In Room 21 we have been learning about Soil.  Our first science experiment we did was looking through  soil to see if we could see any creatures that live in the soil.  There were ants, worms and much more.  

We have also done something called The Turbidity Test.  It’s when you move you move a magnet through the water with a certain amount of soil inside and then you see how far you can see the magnet.  This experiment proves how clear the water is.  

Did you know that there is more micro-organisms in a spoonful of soil than there is people on Earth?  There are four different layers of soil.  Topsoil, subsoil, weathered rock and bedrock.  We have also been learning about what life would be like without soil.  Soil is so important to us that this year the United Nations said that it is The International Year of the Soil.

This Term we have been working with Youth Town sports and learning different hockey skills.

About the Artist

About the Artist Barath is 10 years old. He was born in Melbourne but his parents are from Sri Lanka. He is a Year 6 student at Elm Park Primary School.  He has been attending Elm Park for 5 years now. His favorite subjects are Mathematics, P.E and Art. Barath enjoyed the colour wheel eye art because it was interesting colouring the colour wheel. He found it a bit hard to blend the colours. The school values Bharath used while doing the colour wheel eye was Quality because he finished his work in a very high standard and perseverance because he did not give up in the middle of the art when it got challenging. In this progress he learnt how to blend colours,tinting,shading and how to draw a realistic eye. When Barath grows up he wants to be a famous karate Sensei ( karate  teacher) when he is 36 years old in New Zealand.

I am so proud of being able to finish my art on time.
I found it tricky to blend the colours.

My next step is to find out what colours go well with other colours.

Last Thursday we had a visit from HOSHINO GAKUEN PRIMARY SCHOOL.  They showed us how to play Japanese card games and how to write our names in Japanese.

I am learning to find information about an extra-ordinary person and write that information into my own words.

I am so proud of being able to put the information into my own words.

It can be tricky to find lots of information about my extra-ordinary person.

The next step for me might be to find more information about another person.

Bike Skills - Term 1

This Term we have been taking part in a Bike Wise Programme where we have been learning different bike skills on the field.  We have learned how to scoot on our bike, we learned how to signal with both hands and we also learned how to go over an obstacle.  These skills will help us when we go Mountain Biking at Camp in Term 4.
